Best places for spearfishing

What Is Spearfishing?

Spearfishing is an ancient and traditional method of fishing that involves catching fish by using a spear or other sharp implement and normally takes place underwater.

Unlike other forms of angling, it does not require the use of bait but rather relies on accuracy and skill to use a spear to catch the fish.

The main equipment used in spearfishing is the speargun, slingshot, or polespear.

The speargun is a tube-like device that holds an arrow or harpoon which is propelled by compressed gas to shoot and pierce the fish.

Slingshots are handheld devices that require the user to manually pull back and release a rubber band in order to launch an arrow at its target.

Polespears are similar to a long harpoon and can be used by either pushing or throwing them at the fish.

Spearfishing can be done in both saltwater and freshwater environments and depending on the location, spearfishers target different types of fish including tuna, snapper, grouper, cod, and shark.

Spearfishing holds a certain adrenaline-type rush in that this is quite a raw and historical way of fishing, a style that is very different for example, from fly fishing or deep sea fishing.

It is also considered to be a sustainable way to fish as it does not require bait and only targets specific species of fish, thus leaving other marine life unharmed.

Some countries allow spearfishing whilst in others a license may be required.

Great Places to Try Spearfishing

Spearfishing in Florida

Although there are various places to experience it around the world, here are some top spots for spearfishing that you should consider.

1. Hawaii

Can there be many places better than Hawaii to experience spearfishing for the first time?

The islands have an abundance of marine life and many of the waters are crystal clear, making it a paradise of sorts for spearfishers.

There are many different species of fish that can be found in Hawaii, including mahi mahi, tuna, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and marlin.

The islands of Kona and Maui are particularly good places to try spearfishing as a novice and companies that offer trips include:

2. The Florida Keys

This area is known for its stunning waters, and there is plenty of fish to be found around the reefs and mangroves.

Snapper, grouper, Spanish mackerel, and other species make their home in these warm waters.

The visibility can be fairly low at times due to murky water and patches of algae, so it’s important to be aware of your surroundings.

In the Keys, some recommended companies include:

  • Forever Young Charters – specialize in spearfishing trips and have years of experience and are a well-respected company.
  • Spearit Charters – based in Big Coppitt Key, Florida, are also a popular company and run by Michelle.

3. Miami, Florida

Miami Blue offers trips for first-timers and for experienced spearfishing experiences and they provide classes and can provide the equipment and everything you need.

4. UK

If you are U.K.-based, Spearfishing UK is located in St.Austell (a beautiful part of the country) and runs excellent courses down in Cornwall – including 1 and 2-day courses and private lessons as needed.

Spearfishing Tips for Beginners

Spearfishing can be intimidating for first-timers who are unfamiliar with the necessary equipment, techniques, and safety protocols. To help you make the most of your first spearfishing experience, here are some tips:

1. Choose the Right Gear

Make sure that you have all of the proper gear before heading out on a dive.

This includes a wetsuit, spear gun, fins, snorkel, and weight belt.

Additionally, it’s important to understand the specific regulations of your area so you know what type of gear is allowed in the location where you’ll be spearfishing.

2. Respect the Environment

Make sure that your gear is not impacting the environment negatively, and be mindful of how much fish you are taking out of the water.

Never leave trash or debris behind when you are finished spearfishing.

3. Take a Class

Even if you’ve done some research on spearfishing, it is highly recommended to take a class before heading out on your own.

It can, like many things, be much more enjoyable when you understand what you are doing and the techniques involved.

4. Don’t Rush

Take your time when spearfishing as rushing can cause accidents and may even disturb the underwater environment.

Remember to stay calm and to take breaks in between dives if needed.

Spearfishing is an exciting activity that can provide hours of fun and adventure.

However, it is important to keep the above tips in mind so that you stay safe and maintain a healthy relationship with the underwater environment.

Spearfishing Techniques

No matter what type of spearfisher you are, there are certain techniques that will help make your fishing trips more successful.

1. Float Line

The first technique to consider is the use of a float line. This is a buoyed rope that connects your spear and the fish you catch.

This will help reduce lost catches due to snags or submerged objects, as well as make it easier for you to track down your catch if it moves away from you.

2. Understand the Conditions

Another important technique is to be aware of the conditions and environment in which you are fishing.

This means understanding where the fish are likely to be, based on water temperature, current, and other factors.

You should also know when it is best to hunt certain types of species, such as during mating or spawning seasons.

3. Spearing a Fish

You should aim for the head of the fish if possible, as this will cause the least amount of harm and make it easier to catch.

When you think you’ve got a good shot, wait until the last possible second before pulling the trigger on your spear gun or throwing your spear.

This will give the fish less time to react and increase your chances of a successful catch.

4. Practice Safety When Spearfishing

This means:

  • wearing appropriate gear such as fins, wetsuits, and gloves
  • obeying local fishing regulations
  • never hunting solo
  • having the proper fishing license or permit for where you’re fishing.

Equipment You Need for Spearfishing

There are certain pieces of equipment that you will need for spearfishing and these are as follows:

1. Spear Gun

The spear gun is one of the most essential items when it comes to spearfishing and is used to actually fire the spear at prey.

Most guns are powered by a rubber propulsion band, which when released propels the spear forward.

2. Spear

The spear itself is usually made from stainless steel and attaches to the tip of the gun.

It comes in various lengths and thicknesses and needs to be chosen according to what type of fish you are planning to try and catch.

3. Buoyancy Compensation Device (BCD)

This device helps to keep you afloat while underwater and can also be used as extra storage space for your equipment.

4. Wetsuit or Drysuit

Both wetsuits and drysuits provide insulation against cold water temperatures and protect against jellyfish stings or any other sharp objects that may be present in the ocean.

5. Mask & Snorkel

A mask and snorkel are important to have when spearfishing as they allow you to observe your prey without having to come up for air.

6. Fins

Having a good pair of fins is essential for efficient swimming underwater and will also help you move quickly if needed.
